Why Napoleon was a bad leader

Napoleon may have done some good things for France but he was a bad leader who only thought about himself. He opened schools for everyone to go to which is a good thing but the only reason he did that is to have more intelligent and discipline officers to lead his armies. There is also the Napoleonic code that helped France a lot in some ways but it brought back some of the old things the revolution was trying to get rid of like men having all rights and woman were just suppose to stay home. The revolution was trying to get rid of a monarchy, but then Napoleon went and crowned himself emperor which gave him power over everything just like a king. While he ruled he did a couple of good things like making everybody pay equal taxes and opened banks to keep the taxes in. Napoleons will to rule all of Europe was his worst trait, because of this he came up with the continental system which stopped all trade with Britain. That caused a lot of problems in some places and that’s when people started to notice that he wasn’t the best leader. They started to turn against him and exiled him to an island where he would live out the rest of his days.

  1. I disagree with this. If he opened schools so that his army is smarter, that is a good thing because he didn't want France to have a stupid army. Most of the Napoleonic Code is still used today, so that can't be considered a bad thing. All of the good things that he did outweighs all of the bad things he did, so he should be considered a good leader, along with people like Alexander the Great

    4. Whether he was a good guy or not, he was an effective ruler. Also a coalition of Austria, Sweden, Russia, Great Britain, Spain, and Portugal defeated him after he returned from Russia and exiled him to the island of Elba. There he was allowed to rule as a sovereign and had his own army and navy. He escaped to France and when the French army was sent to stop him from reaching Paris, they sided with him and marched with him. He ruled France again for 100 days, and then the French people turned against him and he was exiled to the small island of Saint Helena (under British rule). He later died there. Just layin' down facts.

    6. This is an interesting site but not all of the facts are right, specifically towards the end and the grammar of the piece is off. Next time maybe try looking at your work before posting it.

  2. Napoleon was NOT a bad leader. Napoleon, leader of France during Napoleonic Wars, supported the ideals of the Enlightenment by rising to power, reforming France, and uniting France to give its people nationalism. He reformed and gave peace to France during the French Revolution and expanded its lands so much that he had conquered most of Europe. He also improved the economy drastically. It was only after all his works that he crowned himself emperor.

  8. I am writing a paper on Napoelon and puting aside the fact that he was a great military leader i would say he was bad for france because he left all of Europe in a ecenomic depression because of his continental system

  9. Napoleon was a great leader.
Leadership: Getting people to do what the leader wants.
Napoleon was a great leader because:
He was great for France, France's military power, etc.
He got people to do what he wanted
Unlike, say, James Wilkinson, he was actually successful (He would have been more so if he weren't mad)
Reformed france, and changed it for the better
    Gave peace to France.

Also, Napoleon wasn't an octopus. He couldn't solve all of France's problems, but overall, he did more good than Bad.

  19. All historical events will have two sides to it: the modern view and the contemporary view. Under the modern view of the reign of Napoleon, he may be thought of as warmongering and as a traitor to the revolution because, by today's standards, the use of war to settle controversy is frowned upon. He would also have betrayed the ideals of the French Revolution because he was unsuccessful in the goal of establishing a truly democratic state. Looking at it from the view of Napoleon's contemporaries, war was the go-to option to settle conflict. The nations of Europe at this time all had their fair share of war. As for the ideals of the revolution, it could not be a quick process to establish democracy, especially after the Committee of Public Safety and the Directory, but many historians believed that Napoleon, if given the time, would establish the democracy that the French Revolutionaries desired. Both viewpoints are important and both should be understood; looking at only one will give a very skewed view of any historical event.

    1. Furthermore, in the words of C. P. Scott, "Facts are sacred, opinion is free." There is what Napoleon did and then there is what people think about what Napoleon did. Furthermore, to continue with Edward Hallet Carr, "The philosophy of history is concerned neither with the past by itself nor with the historian’s thought about it by itself, but with the two things in their mutual relations." Although the thoughts on Napoleon's reign in France are in opposition, each must be understood, as Carr states, in order to truly learn anything from history. It is, of course, not unexpected that people have trouble understanding or accepting opposing views, for, to paraphrase Stephen Hawking, neither theory inherently is wrong, it depends, simply, upon the "fishbowl" in which you live.

  36. Napoleon is one of the greatest military commanders of all time, this can be proved by his victory at Austerlitz defeating a combined Austrian and Russian army considerably larger than his. The defeat of his armies in Spain was due to the British victory at Trafalgar and a few bad tactical decisions by generals. However, Napoleon was an inspiring leader and treated his soldiers with respect and he brought back nationalism for France. The idea that Napoleon was a rain cloud over Europe was British propaganda, history is written by the winning and after 10 years of controlling Europe he was eventually defeated by Britain who then launched massive propaganda campaigns against him. Napoleon actually modernised Europe by brining reforms to backwards countries in Europe he overtook.
Napoleons reforms transformed France, yes they did bring back some of the old regime and the patriarchal family was restored. However, peasants were not able to purchase property and there was equality before the law.

  38. The French Revolution focused on the rights of men not women. While there were women involved, the purpose of the revolution was not to give them rights. Olympe de Gouges who was fighting for women's rights was actually guillotined for writing The Declaration of the Rights of Women. So while Napoleon didn't support women's rights, he didn't exactly change anything either.

  49. -You may have done some good things for France, but you mainly did things for yourself, correct?
    - You opened schools for everyone to go to, however, the only reason you did that was so you would have more intellectual and discipline officers to lead your armies, correct?
    - Is it true, that you made the continental systems to block trade with Britain?
    - Did you know, that enforcing the continental system led to the Peninsular war and the invasion of Russia?
    - To add on, did you know that when the Russians invaded France, they destroyed all of your crops and livestock, causing hunger in all of french army? And by knowing that, why would you let you army starve, because by doing that, they would have a terrible immune system which would lead them to getting more sick and even some of them could have died, so knowing that why would you not give them food or anything to benefit their health?

  52. Napoleon was a brilliant military leader, who brought forth the Napoleonic Code, which is still used today. To be fair, he took what little rights women had, and marched an army of 500 000 troops into Russia, and then returned with less than 100 000. However, out of his 70 battles that he fought he only lost 8, which is pretty impressive. He stayed with his first wife, Josephine, even after she cheated on him. He also brought stable government to France after the end of the French Revolution, which was good, because the people were kind of like "well what the hell happens now". It could be argued that Napoleon was a bad man, but I don't think that he was too bad. It's a shame that he became "power hungry" which resulted in his downfall, but given the right resources, I believe that he could have caused a lot of good for France.
